New Standing Voice survey finds 80 % of Tanzanians with albinism have significant uncorrected sight loss

A new community survey finds that more than 80% of Tanzanians with albinism have significant uncorrected vision impairment, calling for urgent integration of low-vision support into national eye health strategy.

A comprehensive community survey conducted by Standing Voice across three regions of Tanzania has found that more than 80 per cent of participants with albinism have significant, uncorrected vision impairment — a rate far exceeding the general population and one that directly affects educational attainment and economic participation.

The survey, which included over 600 participants, found that access to low-vision services and affordable glasses remained the most commonly cited unmet health need. Many respondents reported travelling long distances to reach the nearest eye clinic, and several described being turned away due to lack of specialist knowledge about albinism-specific vision conditions.

Standing Voice called on the Tanzanian government to integrate low-vision support into the national eye health strategy and to fund community outreach programmes that can reach persons with albinism in rural areas.
