New shingles vaccine reaches South Africa, but cost is a barrier

Shingrix, a more effective shingles vaccine, is entering South Africa's private pharmacies — but public sector access remains unlikely in the near term.

A vaccine that has been available in the United States for a decade is finally arriving in South Africa. Shingrix, considered more effective than its predecessor, is set to be stocked at private sector pharmacies across the country, according to AllAfrica.

The timing matters for people with albinism. Reduced melanin in the skin means heightened UV sensitivity, and many people with albinism are prescribed immunosuppressive treatments for related dermatological conditions — a factor that can elevate the risk of shingles, a painful viral reactivation tied to a weakened immune response.

The gap between private and public access is the story here. AllAfrica reported that while Shingrix will be available to those who can afford private healthcare, there is no clear path for it to enter South Africa's public health system in the foreseeable future. South Africa's public sector serves the majority of the population, including many people with albinism who already face barriers to consistent dermatological and ophthalmic care.

Shingrix has demonstrated over 90% efficacy in clinical trials, according to the source — a significant improvement on the older Zostavax vaccine, which offered closer to 51% protection. The newer vaccine uses a different mechanism, combining a piece of the varicella-zoster virus with an immune-boosting adjuvant, the report noted.

For the albinism community in South Africa, the launch is a reminder of a familiar pattern: medical advances that arrive first, and sometimes only, for those with the means to reach private care. Sunscreen, quality eyewear, and specialist dermatology consultations already sit beyond routine reach for many. A vaccine priced for private pharmacies follows the same line.

No launch price was confirmed in the AllAfrica report at time of publication.
