New Study Identifies Genetic Links for a Skin Condition Affecting People with Albinism

A significant breakthrough in understanding hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can affect people with albinism, has been achieved through an extensive genetic study recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

The research represents one of the largest genetic investigations of this painful skin condition to date. According to the study, hidradenitis suppurativa is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, making this research particularly important for affected individuals.

The researchers identified nine genome-wide significant loci (specific positions in the genome) associated with hidradenitis suppurativa. Remarkably, five of these genetic markers had never been reported before in connection with this condition.
