<p>A collaborative project between a Cape Town-based NGO and the Western Cape Department of Health has secured a year's supply of high-SPF sunscreen for more than 1,200 children with albinism attending public schools across the province.</p><p>Sunscreen is one of the most critical health interventions for persons with albinism, who lack the melanin needed to protect skin from ultraviolet radiation and face dramatically elevated rates of skin cancer as a result. Despite its importance, high-SPF sunscreen remains unaffordable for many families.</p><p>The project also trained school nurses and teachers to assist with daily application and to recognise early signs of skin damage requiring referral.</p>
